NordVPN has a CyberSec feature and the more advanced Threat Protection feature that blocks ads, malware, and trackers. I tested it out and it blocked ads on BuzzFeed, Forbes, DailyMail, and other ad-heavy websites. It even stopped me from accessing a few websites with malware which is great since only a small number of VPNs offer an ad-blocking feature.
Enables or disables CyberSec. When enabled, the CyberSec feature will automatically block suspicious websites so that no malware or other cyber threats can infect your device. Additionally, no flashy ads will come into your sight. More information on how it works:

When using NordLynx (NordVPN's wireguard technology), sometimes the connection still drops, even when using systemd-resolved as a DNS resolver. This is due to an unmentioned dependency on wireguard-tools which should the be installed, then nordvpnd.service can be restarted.
On desktop systems without a functioning notification system there may be a long delay after executing terminal commands such as nordvpn disconnect and similar. This may be resolved by installing and initialising a notification agent.
Beware the small print, though. The one and two-year deals include an introductory discount, and both renew as a standard annual plan, which sees a major price hike to $8.29 a month. NordVPN doesn't exactly make this clear on the website, but you can find these and all the other renewal costs on its Pricing page (opens in new tab).
A VPN can say anything on its own website, but unlike most of the VPN competition, you don't have to take NordVPN's claims on trust. In November 2022 NordVPN hired top auditing company Deloitte to run an independent audit on its infrastructure and services, and to verify that its logging policy description is accurate.
Our procedure involves connecting to our nearest server from UK and US locations with 1Gbps connections, then running repeated checks using several benchmarking sites and tools (SpeedTest's website and command line app, Netflix's performance test, nPerf, SpeedOf.me and more). We perform the tests using the best two protocols when possible, then repeat the full test run in morning and evening sessions.
The ability to access geoblocked websites is a key advantage of any VPN service. NordVPN doesn't explicitly claim to unblock any particular website or service, but statements asserting that it allows you to "keep access to your favorite websites and entertainment content, and forget about censorship" sound good to us.
You've signed up for NordVPN, you're in a hurry to get started, and NordVPN makes that surprisingly easy. The website directs you to the right app for your platform (Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Linux, Android TV), installation is simple, and our Windows app allowed us to log in quickly via a browser.
A Pause button allows you to effectively disconnect from the VPN for 5, 15 or 60 minutes. If you need to quickly use a website which doesn't work with the VPN, click 'Pause', choose your preferred interval, and the client then disconnects. If you finish your task early, you can hit Resume to restore your connection at any time. But the value here is that if you forget, the app will automatically reconnect for you, reducing the chance that you accidentally leave yourself unprotected for long periods of time.
Expert-level features include the option to set your preferred DNS for VPN connections. Switching DNS could improve browsing performance, help block access to malicious websites, or impart other benefits. Even better, you can add multiple DNS servers and switch between them as and when required.
If you're not connected and realize you need to unblock a website, for instance, you normally have to stop, find and launch the NordVPN app, locate and browse the countries list, click your preferred option, wait to see when you're connected, and finally switch back to your browser.
Settings include options to block WebRTC leaks in Chrome, reducing privacy risks, or to enable Threat Protection Lite's ad, malware and phishing protection. A bonus Split Tunneling feature allows you to disable the VPN for selected websites (those sites will see your real IP address and location, not the IP of the VPN server).
Still, the proxy approach is perfect for simple website unblocking, connections are much faster, and using NordVPN within a browser could be useful in a few situations (if some of your apps don't work with a VPN, for instance, or the VPN hampers your system performance). There are bonus privacy tools, too, including WebRTC blocking (which might prevent some IP leaks) and ad, tracker and malware-blocking via Threat Protection Lite.
NordVPN keeps some logs. While it does not track when we used their VPN, how long we used it for, our IP addresses, the servers we used, the websites we visited, or the files we downloaded while connected, it does keep track of our email addresses, payment data, the timestamps of our last sessions, customer service information, and how we used the NordVPN site.
Every week, Threat Protection will generate your seven-day protection summary. The idea is to put you in control of your digital hygiene. It lists all the blocked ads, malicious websites, malware, and trackers. By analyzing this report you can learn which sites and behaviors to avoid in the future.
I Purchased nordvpn because one site that I accessed required this vpn in order to receive some of their content. After activating nordvpn, I noticed that the site stated that I did not have the vpn. I contacted nordvpn who said that they would get back to me. This continued for several days, and nordvpn reply only concerned buffering and disconnections.I am done. I need a refund.
In 2008, NordVPN co-founder Tom Okmanas also co-founded Tesonet, and Darius Bereikais was named Tesonet's CEO. Datasec Holdings (registered in Belize) filed ownership for Tesonet's Lithuanian website, registered a now-defunct site for Tefincom -- a Panamanian company managed by a registration agent in Cyprus -- and then signed NordVPN's app. Under its Tefincom label, Tesonet's Datasec Holdings entity redirected Tefincom's site to NordVPN -- then registered the NordVPN trademark and listed itself as the developer of Nord's iOS app.
NordVPN has two MacOS clients -- one that can be sideloaded from the website and another that can be downloaded from Apple's App Store. The sideloaded MacOS client has a per-app kill switch where you can designate specific apps to kill if your VPN connection is interrupted. For our tests, we set the Chrome browser to be killed but, as we jumped from server to server and the VPN connection broke, our Chrome browsing session continued to chug along uninterrupted. It was only after the client timed out when we attempted to jump to a seventh consecutive server that NordVPN killed Chrome.
With the same advanced encryption standard as its pricier rivals above, Surfshark VPN is among the best value on this list -- ideal for budget-conscious users who want to keep the cost down. While other services limit your VPN usage to only five or six devices, Surfshark VPN protects an unlimited number. That said: It has only 3,200 servers, fewer than NordVPN, but they are spread across more than 65 countries. Starting at $2.49 a month, this service also allows specific apps, website and and streaming services to bypass the VPN for your convenience.
@lh_designstudio when I use VPN (like nordVPN), Twitter suddenly starts spinning, pictures/videos don't load, and the app generally becomes pretty slow or doesn't load tweets at all. this started after the last app update. is anyone else experiencing similar issues when using Twitter + VPN??
@gibbybhoy @NordVPN This is happening since you forced an update to the app, changing to TCP is extremely slow, when will you sort it out, other people are saying they have the same problem so the problem is with the nord app, hie can I get the older version of the app it inwould lile a refund
@SquallTownz @NordVPN I can't keep using nord, the way you log in sucks. It never ever seems to work it so stupid. It says I've logged in successfully but then the app doesn't log in. Screw this product lol. Time to find a new VPN.
@Scott54874152 @NordVPN: Virtual memory hog issue - The following programs consumed the most virtual memory: nordvpn-service.exe (3032) consumed 11699986432 bytes. Can't even use your product without browser crashes recently.
@King0fChickens @NordVPN I've had nothing but issues with connection drop outs, I've done everything on the website to fix this but it's still happening. I wish I could cancel and have a refund, it's not working.
@infination i would recommend @nordvpn and @protonvpn. I'm sure there are others that are worthy. Pay your VPN provider, please don't be ignorant. Free VPNs are going to be the hack of you.on iOS I recommend Disconnect Privacy DNS. not even sure where they dump that crap. use a VPN over it
A copy of the NordVPN official website, which is a famous VPN service, was recently found by our researchers at nord-vpn[.]club. As with the original, it prompts users to download a program for using the VPN; but apart from the program itself, the fake authors distribute a dangerous banking trojan - Win32.Bolik.2.
According to our data, the malware campaign that uses those fake websites is primarily targeted at English-speaking audiences and was launched on August 8, 2019. However, at the time this news was released, the malicious fake NordVPN website already had thousands of visits.
On top of that, at the end of June this year, the same hacker group copied websites of office programs: invoicesoftware360[.]xyz (the original is invoicesoftware360[.]com) and clipoffice[.]xyz (the original is crystaloffice[.]com), where the Win32.Bolik.2 trojan was distributed together with Trojan.PWS.Stealer.26645 malware.
